GET READY

Environmental, Sustainability and Digitalization courses

Welcome to our digital and sustainable training environment

GET READY (Getting Ready for the Cross-Border Challenges: Capacity Building in Sustainable Shore Use) project is co-funded by European Union. It is targeted to increase the sustainable use of coastal areas. As part of the project outputs, Kotka Maritime Research Center (KMRC) and South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) have provided a training course for You to increase your knowledge concerning logistics and maritime.

GET READY training course includes four lectures, which address themes of climate change, sustainable coastal development, and the potential of digitalization as a driver of sustainability. Each lecture consists of a video that goes through the topic in more detail and a short summary that presents only the main points of the topic. Finally, you can test your progress with a short set of questions. Just click for the start on the BLUE button below to start your voyage to better sustainability.

Environment

The amount of greenhouse gases naturally occurring in the atmosphere has increased as a result of human activity. Because of this the Earth’s temperature is rising exceptionally fast and causing major changes in the climate.

Compared to the pre-industrial era, mankind has already raised the temperature of the earth by more than one degree Celsius. Researchers at the Climate Change Panel (IPCC) have warned that global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius will have serious and even irreversible consequences for the environment and people.

Sustainability

The United Nations has defined the Sustainable Development Goals for the year 2030. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) are to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

Sustainable development is a continuous process for our society making changes for a better life for living and future generations. The most important SDGs for use on the shores of the Eastern Gulf of Finland (EGoF) are climate change, digitalization of the marine ecosystem, economic development, and education.

Digitalization

Digitalization is a megatrend. It means we are changing from the analog to the digital world. By improving productivity, sustainability, efficiency, safety, and environmental issues we can achieve more cost-effectiveness and environmental best practices to our processes. Digitizing the process from paper-based to data-based, we can decrease emissions by the entire logistics value chain. Technologies and business models need to innovate today to deliver connectivity, visibility, and control improving supply chains to manage digital trade logistics.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The effects of climate change are already being felt around the world. The effects are only projected to increase and intensify in the coming decades. Climate change is changing our planet and affecting access to food and water, as well as human health. Although the risks apply to all, the effects are greatest on the poor and vulnerable. The bigger the problems, the harder and more expensive they are to solve. Therefore, prompt action is the best option.

GET READY Project

GET READY project aims to promote the sustainable use of the sensitive coastal areas of the Eastern Gulf of Finland.

GET READY partners in the project are South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK), Kotka Maritime Research Centre (KMRC), the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), and the University of Turku, Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS).

KMRC & XAMK

KMRC is an international research centre doing interdisciplinary applied research to improve maritime safety, prevent accidents and protect the marine environment.

XAMK is renowned for its research, development, and innovation activities aimed at fostering sustainable regional development and well-being, improving economic competitiveness, and innovations.

The project is co-funded by the European Union.
